Aluminum tent pole tubes are extruded aluminum alloy tubes used to build the frames of camping tents, awnings, gazebos and other outdoor shelter structures. The wall is even along the whole length, which keeps every pole straight and makes the frame behave the same way each time the tent is pitched or taken down.
The tubes are supplied in 10 mm, 11 mm and 15 mm outer diameters. These three sizes cover the common frame positions of small and medium tents, where thinner poles are used for inner frame sections and thicker poles carry the load of the roof and the legs. Buyers can order one diameter or mix sizes in a single order.
Because the material is aluminum, a pole of a given diameter weighs far less than the same pole made from steel. Lighter poles are easier to carry on foot and reduce the packed weight of the tent, which matters for hiking, backpacking and motorcycle camping where every kilogram counts.
The surface of the tube is smooth and free from sharp seams, so it can be handled without gloves and will not snag the fabric of the tent body. Tubes can be cut to length, drilled for end caps and fitted with elastic shock cord or standard pole connectors using ordinary workshop tools.
Tent poles work as a system. Individual tubes are joined by ferrules, sleeves or shock cord to form long, continuous sections that spring into shape when the tent is assembled. The straightness of each tube and the consistency of the diameter from batch to batch are therefore important, because a single out of round tube can make the whole frame hard to push through the sleeves.
Typical uses include dome and tunnel tents, family camping tents, beach and sun shelters, market stalls, event awnings and replacement pole sets for tents whose original poles have been lost or bent. The tubes are also used for lightweight display frames and garden structures.
Orders are packed in bundles so that the tubes arrive straight and protected. Diameter, length, wall thickness and end treatment are agreed before production, and buyers are encouraged to confirm the exact combination required for their frame design.
Wall thickness is normally kept thin to hold the weight down, yet thick enough that the tube does not kink when the tent is bent over. The wall can be adjusted for customers who need a stiffer frame for larger shelters or a more flexible pole for small backpacking tents.
Aluminum also stands up to the everyday moisture that tents meet in the field. A tube that gets wet during a trip will not show the fast surface rust of plain steel, so the frame keeps working season after season. Mill finish and colour anodised surfaces are both common on this type of pole.
