This seamless square aluminum tube is drawn from 5083 alloy to give a square section with uniform wall thickness and clean, sharp corners. A drawn seamless tube has no welded seam along its length, so the wall is continuous and the section resists bending and twisting evenly when it is used as a structural member. Square tube is easier to join than round tube because the flat faces meet flush, which makes it a practical choice for frames, guards and supports that are bolted or welded together.
5083 is a non heat treatable aluminium alloy with high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability. Those properties make it a common choice for marine and offshore structures, transport frames and pressure equipment, and they carry over well to square tube used in damp or salt laden conditions. The alloy resists attack from sea water and industrial atmospheres, keeps most of its strength in the welded joint, and does not require post weld heat treatment, which simplifies fabrication on site.
Fabricators use seamless square tube for handrails, support legs, machine frames, guard rails, trailer chassis, walkway structures, shelving uprights and architectural trim. The flat outer faces make it simple to mount brackets, panels and clamps, and the smooth drawn surface takes anodising or powder coating if a coloured finish is wanted. Because the corners are square and tight, the tube can also be used where a neat visible joint matters, such as reception counters and display frames.
Square tube is cut with a carbide tipped saw or a metal cutting band saw and the ends are deburred so joints fit tight. Mitred corners are common for frames; check the angles before welding, because a small error is visible on a square section. Weld 5083 with a matching filler and control the heat input to limit distortion, then clean the weld zone so the corrosion resistance of the surface is retained. Bolt together frames can use corner brackets and through bolts, and holes should be drilled with standard tooling.
Tube is supplied in straight lengths and packed in bundles with protective wrapping to keep the drawn surface free of dents and scratches, and cut lengths can be produced to a cutting list for repeat frame jobs.
