This extruded oval tube is produced from 7005, 7020 and 7021 aluminium alloy. The flat oval section gives a wider bearing surface than a round tube of the same weight, which makes it useful where a slim part has to resist bending in one direction. Sections are extruded, straightened, cut to length and finished, and the wall thickness is kept uniform around the profile so the tube bends or welds predictably. Oval sections also sit flatter against a panel and are easier to grip than a round tube of similar size.

Customization scope

Width, height, wall thickness, corner radius and length are set from the drawing, and a new die can be developed for a section that is not in the standard range. Bending, punching, drilling, tapping and welding are carried out after extrusion, so the tube can be delivered as a finished part rather than a plain length. Surface treatment, protective film and laser marking are also available.

Applications

The oval tube is used for bicycle and motorcycle frames, wheelchairs, tent and awning frames, handrails, furniture frames, luggage frames, sports equipment and light structural members. The alloy choice changes the balance between strength, weldability and corrosion resistance, so the grade is selected to match the manufacturing route of the finished part. Because the oval shape places material where the load is highest, a lighter part can often replace a heavier round tube without changing the mounting points.

Production capability

Extrusion, heat treatment, stretching, cutting, CNC machining and anodizing are handled in house. Section dimensions and wall thickness are checked against the drawing so that parts from different batches fit together. Sample lengths can be supplied for bending trials before a production order is placed.
