Adjustable Telescoping Tarp Poles

Telescoping tarp poles are adjustable aluminum supports used to hold up tarps, awnings and lightweight shelters. Each pole is built from two or more aluminum tube sections that slide inside one another and lock at the height the user needs, so one pole can serve several set-ups and still pack down into a short bundle.

How a Telescoping Pole Works

The outer tube is the largest section and takes the load at the base. Smaller tubes slide inside it and are held by a locking collar, a twist lock or a spring pin. When the lock is released the sections slide freely, which allows the pole to be shortened for transport and extended on site. The top of the pole usually carries a flat cap, a hook or a threaded tip so that it can push against a tarp eyelet, a ridge line or a shelter frame without tearing the fabric.

Because the sections overlap when extended, the strength of the pole depends on how much tube remains inside the section below. Poles are therefore rated for a maximum height.

Materials and Finish

Aluminum is the usual choice because it keeps the pole light enough to carry while still holding a shelter steady. The tubes are commonly anodized, which gives a hard surface that resists scratching and corrosion, and the anodizing can also add colour. Locking collars and tips are made from metal or reinforced plastic and are matched to the tube diameter so that the sections slide smoothly without play.

Customization Options

Tarp poles can be produced to a drawing, with the tube diameter, wall thickness, number of sections, maximum length and lock type chosen for the job. Common options include anodized or painted finishes, printed tubes, shock-corded assemblies that keep the sections together, threaded or hook tops, and matching carry bags. Because a new lock or tip needs its own tooling, buyers should confirm whether a standard fitting can be used or a new one has to be made.
