The 4080 aluminum profile is a rectangular T-slot extrusion from the metric 40 series, with a nominal 40 mm by 80 mm cross-section. Slots run along the faces of the bar, so brackets, T-nuts, hinges and panel strips can be clamped at any point along its length instead of at fixed holes. That is what makes the section useful for machine frames, guards, workbenches and modular structures that have to be built, adjusted and rebuilt on site.
Each face carries a T-shaped slot sized for the fittings of the 40 series. A T-nut or hammer nut is dropped into the slot and tightened, which pulls the bracket against the profile and locks the joint without drilling the bar. Because the slot is continuous, a rail can be repositioned by loosening the fittings and sliding them along, and extra brackets can be added later wherever a new panel or support is needed.
The 40 by 80 proportion puts more material along the deeper axis, so the profile resists bending and deflection better than a square section of the same series. That suits long horizontal beams, gantry rails and frame uprights that carry a load between supports. At the same time the smaller face keeps the same slot spacing and fitting sizes as the rest of the 40 series, so one set of brackets and nuts works across the whole frame.
Bars cut cleanly on a standard mitre or chop saw with a blade for aluminium, and the cut faces are usually squared and deburred before assembly. Frames are built by butt-jointing bars with angle brackets, corner connectors or anchor fasteners, which means the same bar can be re-used when a layout changes. No welding is needed, so a frame can be taken apart, shortened and rebuilt with nothing more than hand tools.
For anyone building a machine frame or work area, the 4080 profile offers a good balance between span strength and weight. It fixes together with standard 40 series fittings, needs no machining for most joints and can be adjusted as requirements change. The aluminium surface needs no painting to resist corrosion, and the section stays straight and accurate, so panels, guards and doors line up as the frame is assembled.
