This anodized aluminum pipe is produced in 6063 T6 and can be supplied with a sand blasted finish. The two surface steps are done in order: the pipe is blasted first and anodized afterwards, which is what gives the matte, even surface instead of the bright gloss a plain anodized tube shows.
Where it is used
A sand blasted anodized aluminum pipe is chosen when a metal part is visible and should not read as bright metal: handrails and grab bars, furniture and shelving frames, display and shopfitting, door and window trim, light fixtures, camera and equipment housings, and architectural trim. The matte surface hides small handling marks, which is the practical reason many buyers move from polished tube to this finish.
How to choose
Alloy and temper: this pipe is made in 6063 T6. If your part is bent hard after forming, say so, because a lower temper bends further before it cracks.
Outer diameter and wall: give both. Wall thickness sets the stiffness, and a thicker wall also gives the anodized aluminum pipe more material to blast back without cutting through.
Length: state the finished length rather than a stock length, and say whether the ends are square cut, deburred or threaded.
Finish order: anodizing after sand blasting is the standard route here. If your part is welded, the anodized aluminum pipe has to be welded first, because welding burns the anodic layer.
Colour: sand blasting keeps the surface matte but does not change the shade, so choose the anodizing colour separately. Natural, silver and dark shades are the common choices.
Handling: a blasted anodized aluminum pipe shows fingerprints less than polished tube, but it still needs film or paper between parts in transit.
