The aluminum tent pole on this page is an adjustable replacement pole made from 7001 alloy and finished with an anodized surface. It is produced for tent makers and repair workshops that need a pole matching an existing frame rather than a complete new tent. Because the pole is adjustable in length, a single part number can replace several fixed-length poles and a repair does not have to wait for a bespoke length to be made.
Alloy choice and strength. 7001 is a high strength aluminium zinc alloy, and it is chosen for tent poles because it gives more stiffness for its weight than lower strength alloys. A stiffer pole holds a tent wall or flysheet without bowing under wind load, and because aluminium is light, the packed weight of the tent stays low enough to carry. The alloy also takes an anodized finish well, which is why most replacement poles are supplied anodized.
Anodized finish. Anodizing grows an oxide layer in the surface of the aluminium rather than adding a coating on top of it, so the finish cannot flake off the way paint can. The layer protects the pole from the humidity, salt and grit it meets on site, and it keeps the surface smooth so the pole slides easily through the tent sleeve. Standard anodized colours are silver and black, and other colours can be produced to match an existing pole set.
Adjustable construction. The pole is built from two or more sections that slide inside one another, so its working length can be set within a range instead of being fixed. The sections are held by an internal shock cord or by a clamping joint, depending on the frame design, and the ends can be fitted with caps, tips or inserts. Adjustability means a supplier can hold one pole length in stock and still cover several tent models, which cuts the number of spare parts that have to be carried.
Made to drawing. Length, outside diameter, wall thickness and the number of sections are all set by the customer's drawing. Drawings and a sample pole are confirmed before production, and the finished poles are checked against that sample so a second order matches the first. Ferrule and joint positions are fixed in the same drawing so that the assembled pole fits the tent sleeve the same way every time. Poles are packed by set, banded and labelled, so a workshop can open one bundle and fit it without sorting.
Applications and use. Outside tent replacement, the same adjustable anodized aluminium pole is used for awning and canopy frames, light display structures, adjustable support stays and folding furniture frames. In every case the requirement is a straight, stiff pole with a clean anodized surface and a joint that holds its setting without slipping.
