This anodized aluminum tube is produced by extrusion and drawing for wind chime manufacturing, where each tube is cut to a set length so that it rings at the required note. The anodic film hardens the surface, keeps the tone stable over time and protects the tube from the dulling that bare aluminum suffers outdoors.
Tubes are made to the customer drawing. Outside diameter, wall thickness, cut length and the drilling position for the suspension cord are all agreed before production, so the finished chime bars hang straight and sound as intended.
6063 aluminum alloy is the usual choice for chime tubes because it draws cleanly and gives a clear, sustained note. Where a brighter or deeper pitch is needed, 6061, 7075 or 2024 grades can be supplied. Tempers from T3 to T8 are available; the temper affects stiffness and therefore the decay of the note, so it is selected together with the tube length and wall thickness. Wall thickness ranges from 0.3 mm to 5.0 mm.
Tubes can be supplied mill finished, anodized or powder coated. Anodizing is the standard finish for outdoor chimes, with colours including natural, silver, black, blue and gold. Colour consistency between tubes is checked in the same batch, because a shade difference is more noticeable on a hanging chime than on a hidden frame part.
Extruded and drawn tubes are cut, bent, punched, welded or drilled as required. Dimensional tolerance is held to about plus or minus one percent, and cut length and hole position are checked on a sample before the run. Tubes are straightness checked and packed so that they arrive without dents.
Typical uses include wind chime tubes, decorative chime bars, musical and percussion parts, display stands, craft frames and interior trim. Buyers introducing a new chime normally send the target note, the required length or a sample tube so the diameter and wall can be matched.
Orders start from short runs upward, with larger quantities quoted separately. Lead time is generally thirty two days for the first five hundred meters and twenty two to thirty days for repeat orders, depending on tooling and finishing. Customized logo, customized packaging and graphic customization are offered from twenty sets. Payment can be arranged by letter of credit, documents against acceptance or payment, telegraphic transfer, Western Union, MoneyGram or open account. Shipment is normally by sea freight from Jiangsu, China.
