Product Overview

This aluminum pole is made from 7001 and 7075 aluminum alloy for buyers who need a light but rigid pole for ski poles, trekking poles, awning poles and camping tent frames. It is supplied as a straight tube or as a sectional pole and is produced in different colors so that it can be matched to the finish of a finished product.

Aluminum gives a useful balance between weight and strength: an aluminum pole is lighter than the same pole in steel, and thin wall tubing still resists bending under repeated load, as tent frames and awning poles require.

Alloy Options

7001 aluminum alloy is a high strength alloy with zinc as the main alloying element. It is chosen for poles that have to stay straight under load and is often used for ski poles and for the load bearing parts of a tent frame.

7075 aluminum alloy is also zinc based and is one of the strongest aluminum alloys in common use for tubing. Where a pole has to carry a high bending load at the lowest possible weight, 7075 is the usual choice. Both alloys are heat treatable, so the temper and wall thickness can be chosen for the load the pole carries.

Form and Structure

The pole can be one straight tube or a multi section pole. A sectional pole puts a smaller diameter tube inside the next section so that the pole can be shortened for transport, and the sections are joined by a connector or a sleeve. Outside diameter, wall thickness and length are set by the buyer for the finished product. Ends can be left plain, or cut and formed to take a cap, a tip or a thread.

Surface finish can be mill finish, anodised or powder coated. Anodising gives an even colored surface and is the usual choice when the pole has to be color matched to a finished product; powder coating gives a thicker, more textured surface.

Applications

Ski poles. A ski pole has to be light and has to pass force from the hand to the snow without bending.

Trekking poles. Trekking poles are built as two or three section poles that fold for carrying. The locking arrangement sits on the inside and the sections telescope into one another.

Camping and tent frames. Tent frames and awning poles use longer sections and often a larger outside diameter, and the pole can be bent where the frame has to follow the shape of the tent. Display frames, flag poles and awning supports use the same tubing.

The outside diameter, wall thickness, length, alloy, temper, color and surface finish are agreed before production. Buyers should state whether the pole is a single tube or a sectional pole and how the ends have to be finished.
