An aluminium extrusion profile is formed by pushing heated alloy through a shaped die, so the cross-section comes from the die rather than from machining. One pass produces the full length of the shape with a consistent wall. European standard profiles are dimensioned so a section bought today still fits the frame or housing designed around it years ago.
A heated alloy billet is pressed through the die; the emerging profile is cooled, stretched to remove internal stress and cut to length. Stretching straightens the profile and locks the dimensions, so the section stays flat along a long run instead of bowing after it leaves the press. The die is made to the drawing before any metal moves, which is why the drawing is the real specification.
Profiles leave the press with a mill finish. The surface is then anodised, powder coated or left bare according to the service environment, and the finish is chosen with the alloy because the two interact. Indoors a clear anodised or painted finish is normally enough; outdoors, coating thickness and the sealing step decide how long it lasts.
Extruded profiles are worked after delivery: cut to length, milled, drilled, tapped and joined with brackets or fasteners. The section can be designed with a slot so assembly needs no welding, and in T-slot profiles the groove itself holds the fixing, so a frame can be assembled and taken apart with hand tools.
Sections are checked against the drawing for wall thickness, dimensions, twist and straightness. Cut ends are inspected and deburred, and the surface is reviewed for die lines, scoring and handling marks that would show through a finishing process.
Choose an extruded aluminium profile when the part is a constant cross-section and the volume justifies a die. Choose a European standard section when the design has to match existing hardware or a published dimension.
