The extendable telescopic aluminium tube is a pole made from two or more aluminium sections that slide inside one another, so the working length can be set and then locked. Because the tube collapses for storage yet reaches a long working length when extended, it suits poles that must travel easily but still stand tall in use. The tube is usually supplied as a complete pole with the sections already matched, so the inner tube slides smoothly inside the outer tube.
Each section is sized so the next section slides inside it with a close but free fit. In a twist-lock design, turning the collar clamps the inner tube and holds the length; in a pin-lock design, a spring pin drops into a hole at a set position. Both styles let the user extend the pole by hand and lock it without tools. A well-matched fit keeps the pole straight when extended and stops the sections from rattling while in use.
Aluminium is chosen for these poles because it is light and does not rust, which keeps the pole easy to carry and simple to store. The surface can be left in a mill finish or anodized; anodizing adds a hard, corrosion-resistant layer that also protects the pole from scuffs when the sections slide. Anodized poles can be produced in clear or in colour, which helps match a tent, awning or accessory.
To set the length, the collar or pin is released, the inner tube is pulled out to the wanted position, and the lock is tightened again. For a twist lock, turning the collar about a quarter turn is normally enough to grip; for a pin lock, the pin must seat fully in a hole. Extending only as far as the lock allows keeps the overlap between sections and holds the pole rigid.
Extendable aluminium tube is used for awning and tarp poles, camping and tent poles, support and prop poles, and adjustable frames. It also appears in cleaning and reaching poles, lighting or camera supports, display stands and general adjustable props where a light, rust-free pole is needed. The pole can be supplied with fittings such as end caps, hooks or threaded tips when a specific attachment is needed.
Keeping the sliding surfaces clean is the main way to protect the pole. Sand or grit between the sections can scratch an anodized finish and make the lock slip, so wiping the tube before it is collapsed keeps the action smooth. Storing the pole dry and fully collapsed protects the lock and the tube ends, and avoiding side loads when the pole is fully extended helps the sections stay straight.
