Small Diameter Precision Aluminum Tube
This small diameter precision aluminum tube is cold drawn from 6061 or 6063 alloy for customers working on instruments, pneumatic fittings and compact mechanical assemblies. Cold drawing refines the wall thickness and the inner surface, so the tube arrives straight, concentric and easy to fit without extra sizing. It is intended for parts where the tube itself is a precision component rather than a simple structural member.
Cold Drawing and Accuracy
Cold drawing passes the extruded tube through a die at room temperature, which tightens the wall and improves the surface finish. The result is a tube with closer diameter control and a smoother bore than a plain extrusion. Wall concentricity, ovality and straightness are checked through the run, and each length is cut to the size on the order. Tolerances are agreed before production so the tube meets the drawing on arrival.
Alloy Choice: 6061 and 6063
6061 is the stronger of the two grades and is chosen when the tube carries load or is machined and threaded. 6063 offers a smoother surface and better formability, which suits visible parts, thin walls and components that are bent or anodised. Both alloys share good corrosion resistance and are readily cut, drilled and tapped. Where a project needs a different grade, other 6xxx alloys can be discussed.
Surface Finish
The drawn surface is uniform and free from heavy die marks, giving a good base for anodising, powder coating or polishing. Where a specific finish is required, it is stated on the enquiry and confirmed before the batch is produced. Bright, satin and painted finishes can all be arranged to match the rest of the assembly.
Typical Applications
- Instrument frames and sensor housings
- Pneumatic and fluid fittings and connectors
- Small mechanical linkages and drive shafts
- Model making and prototyping work
- Medical and laboratory equipment frames
- Antenna and telescopic pole sections
Inspection
Dimensions, wall thickness, bore condition and straightness are measured against the agreed specification, and results are kept for the batch. If certificates or a particular inspection routine are needed, the requirement should be raised before ordering so the work can be planned. The aim is a tube that fits the assembly first time and needs no reworking.
FAQ
How small a diameter can be supplied? Tell us the smallest size your design needs and we will confirm what can be produced and drawn for the grade selected.
Is the bore suitable for pneumatic use? The cold drawn bore is smooth and concentric, which suits fittings and connectors when the specified tolerance is met.
