Aluminum Rectangular Tube 6061 6063 7075 Extrusion Box Section for Carts, Frames and Machine Guards
Extruded rectangular aluminum box section in 6061, 6063 and 7075 for carts, frames and guards
Rectangular aluminum box section is an extruded profile with four flat sides and either sharp or radiused corners. It is produced by forcing a heated billet through a die, so the outside dimensions, the wall thickness and the corner radius stay the same from one end of the tube to the other. This makes the section easy to measure, easy to cut and easy to clamp when a frame or a housing is assembled.
The alloy choice controls how the tube behaves. 6061 and 6063 belong to the magnesium silicon family and both weld well, which keeps fabrication straightforward when a cart, a trolley or a machine guard has to be built from several cut lengths. 7075 uses zinc, magnesium and copper and reaches a much higher strength, so it is chosen where a light section has to carry a heavy load.
Temper matters as much as alloy. A tube supplied in T5 or T6 has been cooled and aged to a controlled hardness, which keeps the section straight during machining and reduces the chance of the wall deforming when a bolt is tightened through it. A softer temper bends more readily but marks more easily while it is being clamped.
Because box section is closed, it resists twisting better than an open channel of the same weight. That is why it appears in cart frames, battery boxes, display stands, guarding, rack uprights and the support frames around heat exchangers. The flat faces also give a good surface for labels, brackets and mounting plates.
Cut lengths, drilled holes, tapped ends and simple bends can all be prepared before delivery if a drawing is supplied. Keeping the cutting and the machining in one place avoids tolerance stacking, because every part is then measured from the same extrusion run instead of from mixed stock bought at different times.
To quote a rectangular tube, please send the outside dimensions, the wall thickness, the alloy, the temper, the finish and the quantity, together with a drawing if the section is not a standard size. The sales team will then confirm whether an existing die already covers the size or whether a new die has to be prepared before extrusion can start.
Surface treatments are chosen after the cutting step, because sawing and drilling expose bare aluminum that then has to be covered by the same finish as the rest of the part. Anodizing and powder coating are the two most common options for box section, and both are applied to the finished cut length rather than to the full extrusion.
Lengths, bundling and the exact quantity per order are agreed before production starts, and the tubes are checked against the drawing before they leave the works. If the section has to match an existing part, please include a sample photograph or the measured dimensions so that the closest available die can be identified.
