The aluminum heat sink is a finned cooling module that draws heat away from power transistors, semiconductor devices and other electronics that release waste heat while they run. Its extruded profile pairs a flat mounting base with a dense field of fins, so a compact part still presents a large surface area to the surrounding air.
Heat sinks of this type are produced from aluminum extrusion alloys, which are chosen because aluminum offers good thermal conductivity together with low weight and easy forming. Extrusion produces a continuous profile that is then cut to the required length, so one die can serve several module sizes and keep the fin geometry consistent from piece to piece.
The fins increase the area where metal meets moving air, which is how the module releases heat. Closely pitched fins pack more cooling surface into a small footprint, while a wider pitch keeps the air channels open and lowers the chance that dust or lint blocks the flow. The base thickness and the fin height are balanced so heat spreads sideways into the fins instead of building up under the device.
The base is normally drilled or tapped so the module can be fixed over the component with screws or clips, and a thermal interface material is used between the device and the base to close the small air gaps that would otherwise slow heat transfer. Flatness of the mounting face matters, because good contact is what lets the heat travel from the package into the aluminum.
The module is used wherever a power component needs to stay within its working temperature:
Length, width, base thickness, fin height and pitch, mounting hole pattern and surface treatment can each be specified around the device that has to be cooled and the enclosure it sits in. The extruded construction also allows the profile to be cut and machined into the finished module shape.
Built from extruded aluminum with a machined mounting base and a dense cooling fin field, this heat sink module is a practical thermal part for high power transistors and semiconductor devices, and it can be produced to the dimensions and hole layout a project needs.
