CNC machined aluminium alloy tube starts as an extruded or drawn tube and then passes through computer numerically controlled machining to receive the holes, slots and faced ends that a finished part needs. Because the starting form is hollow, the finished part stays light for its stiffness, which is why machined tube is often chosen where a solid bar would add weight without adding useful strength.
The base material is an aluminium alloy, in which aluminium is combined with small amounts of other elements to raise strength, improve machinability or change how the surface behaves. Aluminium tube is non-magnetic, comparatively light, and forms a thin natural oxide layer when exposed to air. Tubes are normally supplied as round tube in straight lengths, with wall thickness chosen according to the load the part must carry.
Machining a tube is not the same as machining a solid bar, and the difference shows up in the fixtures. A tube can be squeezed out of round if it is held too hard, so the usual practice is to support the section along its length with a close-fitting mandrel, a split collet or a shaped cradle before any cut is taken. Common operations include drilling of holes, milling of slots and flats, squaring of the ends, chamfering of the edges and thread cutting.
Tube parts are checked for more than hole position. Overall length, outside diameter, wall thickness, roundness of the cross section, straightness along the length, and the presence of burrs at every drilled edge all matter to the person assembling the finished product. A sharp lip left inside a hole can damage a cable or an insert passed through it later, and a burr on the outside can stop a bracket from seating flat, so deburring is treated as part of the job.
Machined tube turns up wherever a light, stiff member has to carry something or connect to something. Typical examples include equipment frames and machine guards, handles and grab rails, support poles and uprights, display structures, and the tubular links and spacers found inside machinery. Furniture frames, fitness equipment and automotive brackets are also common homes for the product.
A clear order starts with a drawing or model showing the tube outside diameter, wall thickness, overall length and every machined feature in position. Stating which dimensions are critical also tells the workshop where to spend its attention. Alloy and temper, quantity, the finish expected on machined and unmachined surfaces, and any inspection the buyer intends to carry out should be agreed before production begins.
